Superman's Arrogance is About To Cost Him More Than Fans Will Believe

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Action Comics #1035

In Action Comics #1035, Superman’s arrogance is on full display and it’s about to cost him more than he could ever fathom. Superman is known as one of the most courageous heroes in the DC universe. As such, arrogance is bound to take over every once in a while. His actions in this issue highlight one of those moments as Superman overlooks the possible threat of his next mission to Warworld.

Superman and Mongul have been entrenched in an ongoing feud for many issues. It all started when Superman saved Thao-La and her fellow refugees from the supposedly deadly Warzoons hot on their trail. Since then, even more has been revealed, including Mongul’s return, though he is not the same version that Superman has fought before. This iteration of Mongul is something completely new, promising readers an epic final battle when the time comes.

In Action Comics #1035 by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Daniel Sampere, and Adriano Lucas, Superman reassures Lois regarding his new mission to defeat Mongul. He makes it clear that there is only one possible outcome, which is Mongul in chains, his slaves freed, and Superman coming home safe. This is likely to be true given Superman’s track record, but the newly-crowned ruler of Warworld has an entire army at his command, not to mention his own brute, raw power. But for readers, the events of Future State surely come to mind as that storyline suggested Clark will be gone for a lot longer than he initially thought. Could it be this mission that saw the future disappearance of Superman?

It’s possible that Future State’s events could be coming to fruition. If so, Clark would miss an awful lot of major events, including Jonathan growing up. Going away isn’t something that Superman should take lightly. After Future State: House of El, readers know that he’ll be trapped in another dimension and spend centuries away from his family. Yes, Superman is right that he won’t be seriously injured or killed, but he has totally glossed over the potential longevity of his absence. It’s very possible that Superman, before he disappeared in future, made the same mistake.

Ultimately, Superman is an undeniable hero, so he’s correct that he stands a very good chance of coming home unscathed. However, as readers have been shown, Superman isn’t invincible and can be defeated. But perhaps the worst punishment of all, which he has suffered, is being forced into isolation for centuries, cutting off all earthly ties. This version of Superman is unaware of what his Future State-self suffered, so it’s difficult to blame him for his lack of perspective. Action Comics #1035 is available in comic book stores and on digital platforms now.
