Squid Game’s Recruiter baited protagonist Seong Gi-hun to return to the island during the final scenes of the series. Since the survival drama started streaming to the public, Squid Game has become Netflix’s most popular series. In the ending of Squid Game, Gi-hun attempts to resolve some of the show’s loose ends, which includes his promises of seeing his daughter, who has moved to the U.S. with his ex-wife. Armed with his newfound billions as the Squid Game winner, Gi-hun hopes to use the money to spend time with his daughter and gain custody of the child.
However, on his way to the airport, Gi-hun spots the Squid Game Recruiter playing ddakji with someone on the platform of a train station. Gi-hun isn’t fast enough to catch the Recruiter, who smiles at Gi-hun as his train leaves the station. Gi-hun turns his sights to the player that received the Recruiter’s card, which he forcible takes. As Gi-hun walks up to the entrance of the plane, he calls the number on the card and gets told by Squid Game’s Front Man to get on the plane for his own good, which causes Gi-hun to storm out of the airport, further delaying his plans to see his daughter. For now, it’s unclear what Gi-hun is going to do, although the circumstances suggest that Gi-hun plans to somehow bring down the entire Squid Game organization.
However, while Gi-hun’s plans are unclear, what’s certain is that Gi-hun going after Squid Game is also what the organization wants. As shown by how Il-nam summons Gi-hun and asks him why he hasn’t spent his money in a year, Squid Game has eyes on Gi-hun all the time, which is probably standard operating procedure with every Squid Game winner who might threaten the organization’s secrecy. This is also confirmed when the Front Man tells Gi-hun to get on the plane when they spoke on the phone. In short, the Squid Game Recruiter meant to be seen but not confronted by Gi-hun, which allowed the Recruiter to avoid Gi-hun while also giving him the means to confirm that the next death games are underway. When the Front Man told Gi-hun to get on that plane, he knew that Gi-hun would do the exact opposite, as it’s clear from observing Gi-hun that he won’t be letting go of what he witnessed – and did – during Squid Game anytime soon.
What remains unclear is what the Squid Game organization plans to do about Gi-hun. They would’ve already killed Gi-hun if they wanted him dead. Instead, they baited him back into the fray. And this could be because Gi-hun is fated to be the Squid Game organization’s next Front Man. This is connected to the theory that old man Il-nam is really Gi-hun’s dad, and that he planned for Gi-hun to become the next Squid Game leader when he’s gone.
In any case, what’s clear is that the Recruiter baited Gi-hun to return to the island. As for what’s really going to happen once Gi-hun confronts the Squid Game organization, it’s all speculation for now. Hopefully, all of these questions and theories will be resolved in Squid Game season 2.
