Halloween is just around the corner, and there are many ways for Pokémon players to build spooky Pokémon teams. Whether playing Pokémon GO or tackling Max Raids and online battles in Sword and Shield, players have a plentiful pick of creepy, spooky, or festive Pokémon who fit the Halloween mood. While Ghost-type Pokémon may be the most tempting, there are a number of Dark and Psychic-types that would also make a fantastic addition to player teams.
There are several ways to pick a Pokémon when building a Halloween-themed team or spooky Pokémon buddy. Numerous Pokémon like Gengar, Phantump, and Mimikyu all have surprisingly creepy Pokédex entries to match their unsettling appearances. Phantump's Sword and Shield Pokédex entry states that these Pokémon are born when the spirits of lost children possess old tree stumps in the forest, while Mimikyu's true appearance under its twisted Pikachu disguise can kill any who reveal it.
It can also be fun to pick a spooky Pokémon based on its appearance. For Sword and Shield players, Gigantimax Gengar is a great choice, with a design that turns it into a massive funhouse tunnel made from its open mouth. When Shiny, the ghoulish purple is replaced by a ghostly white, giving it an even more sinister appearance. Another good choice aesthetically could be Pumpkaboo and its evolution Gourgeist. These pumpkin-themed Pokémon can come in a number of sizes and have jack-o-lantern bodies perfect for celebrating Halloween. Pumpkaboo is a great choice for those who want the spooky flare, but don't necessarily want a scary Pokémon on their team.
A recently added Pokémon from Sword and Shield's DLC The Crown Tundra, Galarian Slowking is a creepy Pokémon with an upsetting origin. Galarian Slowking is created when a Galarian Slowbro is evolved using a Galarica Wreath. According to the official Pokémon site, when the Shellder that is normally attached to a Slowking's head bites down, a poison is released into Slowking's brain, creating a parasitic relationship with the psychically boosted Shellder. Galarian Slowking has an almost zombielike appearance, with the Shellder down over its face. With a Psychic/Poison-type, it is also a strong asset in battle, though it can be a chore to evolve in Sword and Shield, and has only just been released in Pokémon GO with the 2021 Halloween event.
Players could also "dress up" their Pokémon teams with intimidating Shiny Pokémon for the week of Halloween. Pokémon like Galarian Obstagoon and Runerigus both have colorful Shiny forms while looking intimidating and packing a punch in battle, while Shiny Zorua and Shiny Umbreon both have cute appearances and spooky Dark-types, but have a bright splash of blue that helps them stand out in the team and look interesting on the battlefield. With so many choices, each spooky Pokémon team can be unique and fit a player's personal Halloween aesthetic.
