Kit Harington has said that the famous coffee cup mistake in Game Of Thrones season 8 was not his fault. The British actor, 34, played heroic lead Jon Snow, the bastard-turned-warrior, in all eight seasons of the show. Game Of Thrones ran on HBO from 2011 to 2019, and the final season in 2019 saw Harington’s Snow forced to question his loyalties when confronted with his identity as a secret Targaryen.
Game of Thrones season 8 was met with lots of difficulties, including an underwhelming response from long-term fans. Many felt the final six episodes of the fantasy drama to be rushed and unsatisfying. One of the most derided moments was when a Starbucks coffee cup was spotted by viewers in the background of a banquet scene in episode 4, “The Last of the Starks,” having been left on display next to the seat of Emilia Clarke’s Danaerys Targaryen. Images of the coffee cup instantly went viral online, with many fans seeing it as a sign of rushed editing and a glaring oversight by producers. Subsequent re-runs of the episode had the goof edited out, but screenshots and footage remained a hit online.
In an interview with Uproxx, while promoting Marvel’s Eternals, Harington talked about his skill at keeping spoilers under-wraps. When asked if he’d ever slipped up before, the actor revealed he was once blamed for leaving the coffee cup on set on Game Of Thrones, saying it “wasn’t me.” Harington claims that co-star and Sansa Stark actress Sophie Turner “blamed me for that, and I swear it wasn’t.” Turner originally focussed attention on the actor in an interview back in 2019, where she called Harington “lazy” enough to be responsible for the gaffe. Thus, the mystery of the Game of Thrones Starbucks coffee cup continues. Read Harington's full comments below:
“I got blamed for leaving a coffee cup on a shot once, which wasn’t me … Well, [Sophie Turner] blamed me for that. And I swear it wasn’t! Other than that, as far as spoilers, no, I didn’t. I’m pretty good! I’m pretty sure I didn’t mess anything up.”
Harington’s reputation as a flawless artist is commendable, and the star claims to have kept lots of secrets under-wraps for his latest venture. Harington is set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming Eternals, where he plays human hero Dane Whitman. Whitman’s character in the comics goes on to become superhero Black Knight, though due to Harington’s aforementioned tight lips, fans are still unsure whether they’ll get to see the actor don the sword and armor in the Phase 4 film.
The actor's revelation that he wasn't behind Game of Thrones' famous Starbucks coffee cup mistake only deepens the mystery. Unfortunately, it’s doubtful fans will ever truly get to the bottom of the mistake that turned into a viral internet meme. Meanwhile, the Game Of Thrones universe is set for an on-screen revival soon in the form of upcoming prequel series House Of The Dragon. The HBO show will take place 200 years before the events of the original series, focusing on the reign of the Targaryens on the Iron Throne. Doctor Who alum Matt Smith is set to star as Daemon Targaryen alongside a plethora of acting talent. Hopefully, the production team behind House of the Dragon is a little more conscious of set details than their predecessors.
