Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Hasn't Started Filming Yet, Says James Gunn

James Gunn addresses Chris Pratt's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 video and insists that filming hasn't actually started. The director is returning for the third entry in his Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise after completing his last project, The Suicide Squad, for their DCEU competitors. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was untouched by a string of Disney release delays and remains scheduled for May 5, 2023.

While Gunn's next film is far out in terms of the MCU calendar, anticipation for it remains high, and bits of news have been slowly trickling in as the project nears its next stage of production. The latest of these, which made the rounds just yesterday, saw series star Pratt record a video promoting his appearance on a Parks and Recreation podcast from the set of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Sporting the hairdo of his Star-Lord character, the actor tells viewers that it was Day 1 for the Marvel movie, leading everyone to believe that filming had started.

But, according to Gunn himself, the eager, mislead fanbase had jumped the gun. The director insists that filming for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is not yet underway, despite many stories he was seeing to the contrary, but that he and his team are getting close. When a fan directed his attention to Pratt's video, which Gunn hadn't seen, he explains that the actor is instead on set for camera tests:

While Gunn has shared certain details from his new movie with fans, Marvel will want to remain careful with what gets out about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, as a film so far down the calendar could carry spoilers that audiences don't even have the context for yet. This is especially true in this case, as the Guardians themselves are set to appear next in Thor: Love and Thunder, continuing a collaboration from the crossover films Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. However, Gunn has already revealed that Will Poulter has been cast as Adam Warlock, after the powerful character was teased in the end credits scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

While fans surely can't be blamed for interpreting Pratt's video as signifying the start of shooting, the beginning of camera tests should have them just as excited. Pre-production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is clearly ramping up, and with it one of the few upcoming MCU releases to remain fixed on Disney's calendar, there is no reason to suspect any delays. Thankfully, audiences won't have to wait until 2023 to see the Guardians again, as Thor: Love and Thunder is currently slated for release on July 8, 2022.
