Granville Adams, Oz Star, Dies at 58 | Screen Rant

Granville Adams, star of the HBO TV series Oz, has passed away at the age of 58. Adams portrayed Zahir Arif on HBO's prison drama, which ran for six seasons from July 1997 to February 2003. After first featuring as a guest role, Adams was soon promoted to a recurring character on Oz. Arif, Adams' character, who appeared in 48 total episodes of the series, was incarcerated at Oswald State Correctional Facility for possession of stolen goods. However, during the show, Arif becomes a different man, reforming himself with the help of Islam and becoming one of the more tranquil prisoners on the series.

In addition to his most well-known role as Arif, Adams starred as Officer Jeff Westby on NBC's Homicide: Life on the Street from 1996 to 1999. He also appeared in as Detective Jones in 2002's Empire, and played Scout in the 2011 film Magic City Memoirs. Before his passing, the actor had been battling cancer, and last shared an update on his health from his hospital bed on Instagram in July of this year.

In confirmation of Adams' passing, Oz showrunner and executive producer, Tom Fontana, paid tribute to Adams in an Instagram post. Fontana shared a photo of Adams as Arif from the series and captioned the post, "Goodnight, sweet prince/and flights of angels sing thee to they rest." Fellow Oz star, Dean Winters, also shared his own Instagram post, which called the actor a "humble, beautiful soul," as well as Winters saying that he's "a better human being" for knowing Adams. Earlier this year, Fontana and Winters launched a GoFundMe campaign to help Adams pay for his medical expenses. Fontana wrote on the campaign, "As many of you know, our friend and brother Granville Adams has been diagnosed with cancer." Fontana also followed that by saying he hoped people would come together to help give "Granville concrete support in his fight against this vicious disease." The campaign would go on to reach $99,800, which far exceeded the $69,500 goal. The campaign even remained active as Adams continued to receive medical bills for his treatment.

Other Oz former co-stars have also paid tribute Adams, such as Kirk Acevedo, who said he wished the actor would rest easy. By all accounts, Adams was a talented actor and gentle soul with an infectious smile that elevated everyone around him. Adams is survived by his close friends and family. Through both Oz and his many other successful projects, Adams' memory will live on in the minds of both his loved ones and his devoted fans.
