Foundation season 2 is officially on its way, according to an announcement from Apple TV+. The streaming show from creators David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman is an adaptation of one of science fiction's all-time classic book series of the same name by acclaimed author (and biochemistry professor) Isaac Asimov. Foundation season 1 premiered on September 24 and continues to release new episodes every Friday.
Set in a distant future in which the Milky Way is united under the rule of a Galactic Empire, the premise of Foundation has a mathematician named Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) develop a discipline called psychohistory, in which a probabilistic algorithm can predict the future of large enough populations. He makes the alarming discovery that the long-reigning Empire is nearing an inevitable collapse, and that the galaxy is destined to endure a Dark Age of as long as 30,000 years before order is restored. However, Seldon believes the right course of action can shorten this period of conflict and chaos to just one millennium - if he can just convince the right people to trust him.
Though Foundation premiered only two weeks ago, the show has already been embraced by audiences, so much so that Apple TV+ has picked it up for season 2. Matt Cherniss, the head of programming for the streaming service, says he and the creators have been "so excited to watch global audiences embrace" the series and that they "can’t wait to showcase even more of the richly layered world, compelling storytelling and stunning world-building." Robyn Asimov, the author's daughter and a producer on Foundation, says her father "would have been proud" of this adaptation calls the show "a tour de force." Goyer, meanwhile, can't hide his excitement in a direct message to fans:
I'm thrilled that a whole new generation of fans are reading Asimov’s brilliant masterwork. We’re playing the long game with Foundation and I’m grateful to my partners at Apple and Skydance for entrusting me with this epic. Buckle up. We’re about to fold some serious space.

Goyer refers to working on the series as the realization of a childhood dream, and teases this season 2 renewal will allow Foundation to introduce the characters Hober Mallow and General Bel Riose. The sheer expanse of the source material is one of the greatest challenges of adapting Asimov's original, as the story spans 1,000 years and continuously introduces new characters and locations. Already in three episodes, Goyer and Friedman's Foundation has leapt back and forth through time, and with a whole new season to play with, the scope of the show will only continue to grow.
Foundation quickly impressed fans of hard sci-fi, whether familiar or unfamiliar with the Asimov's writing, and this news of a coming season 2 is reason to celebrate. On top of its ambitious storytelling, the series' high production cost is visible in every frame, and to get this vote of confidence from Apple TV so early in its run is a great sign for the long-term. Hardcore fans of Asimov's novels might have yet to decide whether the show truly does them justice, but at least they can be sure the Foundation creative team is receiving the time and backing required to properly realize their vision.
