Cowboy Bebop Trailer Shows Spike, Faye Valentine & Jet Black In Action

Netflix unveils the Cowboy Bebop teaser trailer for the live-action series adaptation of the iconic '90s anime ahead of the full trailer's arrival. The original anime was created by Sunrise Inc. and led by production team of director Shinichirō Watanabe, writer Keiko Nobumoto, character designer Toshihiro Kawamoto, mechanical designer Kimitoshi Yamane and composer Yoko Kanno, who were billed under the collective name of Hajime Yatate. The Cowboy Bebop live-action adaptation was first announced to be in the works in 2017 with Sunrise partnering with Tomorrow Studios to develop the project and Netflix acquiring the rights shortly thereafter.

Cowboy Bebop is set in the far future and centers around bounty hunters Spike Spiegel, Jet Black and Faye Valentine as they travel through the galaxy on the titular starship hunting down targets while also confronting the demons of their past. The cast for the live-action series includes John Cho as Spike, Mustafa Shakir as Jet, Daniella Pineda as Faye, Alex Hassell as Vicious and Elena Satine as Julia. The new Cowboy Bebop series is being developed and showrun by Zoo creator André Nemec and written by The Mandalorian scribe Christopher Yost.

After having revealed the opening credits recreation for the series at the virtual TUDUM event, Netflix has unveiled the first Cowboy Bebop teaser trailer. The video, entitled "The Lost Session," offers a look at the live-action adaptation of the iconic anime characters Spike, Faye and Jet Black in action with footage not featured in the series as they hunt down a troublesome bounty and have a brief flash of Vicious. The first Cowboy Bebop teaser trailer is a treasure trove of Easter eggs for fans of the original anime, beginning with the "Lost Session" title of the video, a nod to the episodes of the original series being referred to as sessions. Moreover, the trailer is not only set to the tune of Yoko Kanno's iconic "Tank!" theme song from the anime but also utilizes Gabriela Robin's "Green Bird" track from "The Ballad of Fallen Angels" with the tease of Vicious, a nod to the iconic fight between he and Spike as teased in images for the live-action adaptation. The trailer's stylish use of the bars separating the central trio as well as being controlled by them also gives a nice insight into some of the style the series will look to bring from both the anime and manga.

One of the biggest takeaways from the Cowboy Bebop teaser trailer is the performances from Cho, Pineda and Shakir as Spike, Faye and Jet Black. The trio have all of the banter and quick wit from the original anime and many of their character's quirks, including Spike's little grumbles when caught up in a fight and his affinity for noodles, even if at the wrong time. Though the trailer might not have given much impression of how the Netflix series adapts the anime's story, fans can look forward to the official trailer arriving next week and catch up with the original Cowboy Bebop on Netflix beginning October 21.
