Captain America Art Imagines a Live-Action Captain Carter Team Up

A new piece of What If…? fan art imagines a live-action team-up between Hayley Atwell’s Captain Carter and Chris Evans’ Captain America. Based on the comic series of the same name, Disney+’s fourth TV series taking place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and explores alternate versions of key events and characters. One of the standout characters in What If...? season 1 was Captain Carter, a version of Peggy Carter who receives the super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, as per the original narrative of Captain America: The First Avenger. Episode 1, “What If...Captain Carter Were the First Avenger?” otherwise plays out almost exactly the same as The First Avenger, with Steve remaining Peggy’s primary love interest throughout her arc.

The final episodes of What If...? season 1 see The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) break his oath of non-interference to assemble the Guardians of the Multiverse in hopes of combatting the Infinity Stone-powered Ultron (Ross Marquand). In the finale, “What If...The Watcher Broke His Oath?” The Watcher and Doctor Strange Supreme (Benedict Cumberbatch) round up Captain “Peggy” Carter, T'Challa's Star-Lord (Chadwick Boseman), Party Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Lake Bell), Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), and Gamora (Cynthia McWilliams). Before the season’s climactic battle, Doctor Strange reveals to Captain Carter that, in his universe, Steve became Captain America, which Peggy says would be a "sight to see."

Digital artist @artoftimetravel on Instagram recently shared some art imagining a real-life Captain Carter and Captain America team-up. The piece sees both characters wearing their 21st-century stealth suits and wielding their shields, representing the United Kingdom and the United States, respectively. In the background, the character's fated dance in Avengers: Endgame is shown, juxtaposing the hypothetical timeline of What If...? against the actual events of the MCU. Check out the image below:

In the post-credits scene of What If...? season 1, episode 9, Peggy returns to the Lemurian Star, mirroring the primary MCU narrative and the beginning of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Like Steve in the original film, Peggy’s sacrifice at the end of What If…? episode 1 sent her from 1942 to the modern world 70 years later, meaning she once again lost her chance to dance with Steve. However, Peggy and Black Widow ultimately discover Steve’s frozen Hydra Stomper with someone inside, suggesting Steve will inherit the Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes’ main MCU arc. Given this, it's likely that What If...? season 2 will feature a Steve and Peggy reunion, but it may not be as romantic as some viewers hope.

On top of Peggy’s awareness of the multiverse, What If…?’s animated nature increases the likelihood that Captain Carter will, at some point, meet a version of Captain America. However, since Steve Rogers passed the shield to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson at the end of Avengers: Endgame and retired, it's possible that the Captain America she meets will not be her beloved. While rumors that Evans will reprise his MCU role persist, his particular character is now an old man after living out his life with Peggy. Still, the actor could come back and play another Captain America from an alternate universe given the arrival of the multiverse in Phase 4, and What If…? writer A.C. Bradley and director Bryan Andrews have both expressed interest in seeing Atwell play Captain Carter in a live-action film. With all these opportunities, it's safe to say that audiences will probably see Peggy and Steve dance again.
