Black Widow Explains A Confusing Hawkeye Endgame Moment

The film Black Widow sheds more light on Natasha (Scarlett Johansson) and Clint/Hawkeye’s (Jeremy Renner) moment in Avengers: Endgame. After a decade-long journey to collect the Infinity Stones, Thanos (Josh Brolin) achieved his goal of decimating half the universe, and his snap affected the remaining Avengers differently. In the five years that followed, Tony, aka Iron-Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), started a family, Steve, aka Captain America (Chris Evans), held support group meetings, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) settled into New Asgard, and Bruce merged himself with the Hulk. Meanwhile, Black Widow led the team and resolved threats anywhere in the universe, including Clint's Ronin persona murdering criminals around the world.

But when the Avengers realized they had the chance to travel back in time, collect the Infinity Stones themselves, and undo Thanos’ snap, Clint and Natasha bravely took on their mission in Vormir. Unfortunately, to get the Soul Stone, either Black Widow or Hawkeye had to be sacrificed, “a soul for a soul”. Both wanted to do the heroic act themselves. For Natasha, sacrificing her soul would mean fulfilling her wish of bringing everybody back, which had been her priority for the last five years, while for Clint, the act would somehow redeem himself after the vigilante life he had led.

Hawkeye had spent the past years brutally killing criminals who had survived the Snap, out of frustration that his entire family did not. In fact, Hawkeye’s only motivation for joining the time heist was the tiniest possibility that his wife and children would be back. So, if he was clearly desperate to see his family, why would he just give up his life easily? Perhaps, Hawkeye wanted to actively save people this time, but it may also be because he learned about the events that unfolded in Black Widow. Knowing that part of Natasha’s intention to sacrifice herself is to erase the red in her ledger, Hawkeye would never want to just stand there and watch. After all, he even told his long-time friend and partner that her “life’s worth ten of mine”.

In Black Widow, Natasha’s Budapest mission with Clint was finally revealed: She had to assassinate Dreykov (Ray Winstone) before being able to defect to SHIELD. Despite knowing that accomplishing her mission would kill Dreykov’s daughter Antonia (Olga Kurylenko), Natasha still went through with it, convincing herself that it was necessary to take down the Red Room. Surprisingly, both father and daughter survived the attack, however, with Antonia gravely injured. She then had her mind and body controlled by a chip, turning her into the Taskmaster. Dreykov using the Taskmaster for his own good fueled Natasha’s guilt, as she knew she was the reason another girl was suffering. That is why Black Widow was set on sacrificing herself on Vormir — because that was her final act of atoning for her past. She had always felt out of place among her Avenger peers, but by dying a hero’s death, she could at least make up for the lives she had taken and destroyed, including the Taskmaster’s.

However, if Hawkeye possibly knew about the Taskmaster, then he also knew about Natasha’s adoptive family — Alexei Shostakov (David Harbour), Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz), and Yelena Bolova (Florence Pugh). Clint might have discerned that between the Avengers and her Russian family, Black Widow was needed by a lot of people and that saving her would be more beneficial than him staying behind. If anything, the events in Black Widow only proved how much Natasha had grown. With that, Hawkeye was instantly ready to dive off that cliff for the Soul Stone.
