Back 4 Blood’s birds are a key obstacle that adds to the strength of the survival horror’s success, but they’re a nuisance if players don’t deal with them. Back 4 Blood is a mechanical upgrade of Left 4 Dead in every way, improving upon the latter game’s strengths while adding its own unique features. While the birds don’t play a new role in Back 4 Blood, they add another level of complexity that players have to be mindful of during Back 4 Blood's difficult campaign.
Back 4 Blood’s birds share a similar role to car alarms in that both of them can summon the horde of zombies. This is a familiar feature from the Left 4 Dead games, where hordes of zombies would be summoned if a car with its alarm on was disturbed. In Back 4 Blood, disturbing the birds can cause much more harm to players as they deal with the zombies and their corruption card effects as the acts continue.
To prevent summoning the horde, it’s important to avoid Back 4 Blood’s bird at all costs. However, there are times in Back 4 Blood where the birds become an additional obstacle when fighting against the common and special infected. In addition to fighting the zombies that are in the area, birds will attract more common and special infected that will force players to burn through an unnecessary amount of ammo to clear them. Luckily, Back 4 Blood's bots are better than players in that they are far less likely to cause any bird disturbance.
Birds in Back 4 Blood can be disturbed if a player runs too close to them, shoots them, or causes them to harm with any number of lethal throwable items. Moving slowly around birds by crouching is an easy way to get around them, but it’s also beneficial at times to completely remove them from the landscape. A well-placed grenade or pipe bomb can explode and simultaneously kill every bird at once, or at least enough of them to prevent the horde from being triggered.
There are a couple of improbable combos in Back 4 Blood that could be used to deal with birds as well. It may be possible to eliminate all birds at once if everyone on the team fires a shotgun at the same time, covering as many angles as possible so the pellets can spread to enough of them. It’s not the most efficient or practical method for dealing with the flock, and failing to eliminate enough birds will immediately summon the horde. Additionally, a really well-placed and coordinated effort to throw and destroy a propane tank over a flock is another way to deal with birds in Back 4 Blood - although this is more comical than anything.
Back 4 Blood is currently available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
