Animal Crossing NPCs Returning in New Horizons’ 2.0 Update

The October Nintendo Direct has revealed that five beloved NPCs are returning to Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Along with an array of other gameplay features and items, Tortimer, Harriet, Brewster, Katrina, and Kapp’n will all join the game as part of the version 2.0 update set to come out on November 5. Bringing back these characters will likely entice fans of the series to boot up the game again to see friends from past Animal Crossing games on their islands for the first time.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ November update will be the game’s last major free update, which is part of the reason why so many features are being added at once. Many of the returning NPCs are incorporated into the larger additions coming to the game like Harv’s Island Market. However, Brewster and Kapp’n will be receiving their own unique features, whether it’s a café that will appear inside the museum or Kapp'n's boat that players can board for a trip.

Accompanying these characters are NPCs like Sahara and Lief, who will appear along with the addition of Harv’s Island Market to New Horizons, an expansion that turns Harv's Island into a bustling marketplace for the traveling merchants of Animal Crossing. This means players will no longer have to wait for them to visit their islands and can instead find them on-demand at Harv's. There are a few surprises even among characters who've already appeared in New Horizons, however, such as Reese and Cyrus, who are coming in as a shop to provide new customization options.

Among the familiar Animal Crossing faces returning to Harv’s Island Market are Katrina the fortune-telling panther, Harriet the hairstylist poodle, and Tortimer the retired tortoise. Katrina and Harriet will have their own shops where they provide their services, with Harriet offering some exclusive new hairstyles. On the other hand, Tortimer does not have a shop but will instead help players with storage, adding more convenience to New Horizons in addition to another friendly face.

Brewster and Kapp’n will bring new locations and features to the island as well. Brewster will open Animal Crossing favorite the Roost, his beloved café from previous games. The Roost comes with many features and will enable players to invite friends, residents, and even villagers not on their island to enjoy a cup of coffee. Kapp’n will be located on the pier, where he can take players to mystery islands in different time zones and hemispheres, singing his iconic sea shanties along the way. This is a big deal, as the islands Kapp’n takes players to will allow them to catch seasonal and time-restrictive bugs and fish without having to deal with cumbersome workarounds like time skips.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ update spells a wonderful tale for fans who have missed characters from past games. On top of getting to meet new NPCs like Lottie and Wardell, players will get to catch up with their old friends Tortimer, Harriet, Brewster, Katrina, and Kapp’n. Set to come out November 5, the version 2.0 update and the Happy Home Paradise DLC coming out with it should give players plenty of reasons to head back to their islands.
